There has been a lot of talk lately concerning “Is Florida getting too expensive since the start of the recession”. Well where hasn’t”. Yes of course prices have increased but then they have every where, no more so than here in the UK. I find it hard to understand why some people living in Britain who are trying to cope with all the price increases in every aspect of life, petrol, utilities, food, clothes and so on, then go off to Florida and complain because their prices have gone up too. What did they expect? That Florida would somehow by pass all the price hikes.
It may be the home of Disney World but it is not a Mickey Mouse world over there. In comparison Florida is STILL the great deal it always was. Yes air line prices have increased dramatically, but it is still very much cheaper to fly to Florida than it is to California or the Caribbean. And food: where in the UK can you still buy an enormous piece of steak in the butchers for £5 per pound.
Eating out in Florida is still probably cheaper than any where else and you certainly do get a lot for your money. I have never, ever been able to finish a meal in a restaurant in Orlando, the portions are huge and they expect you take the leftovers home in a take out box with you. OK we are not talking fine dining here, but who can afford fine dining any where these days?
There is a Chinese buffet restaurant in Orlando where the set price is £7. 50 for an all you can eat meal and IHOP for lunch is only about £7 each. Dinner at any of the many Steak restaurants like Lone Star, Longhorns or Santa Fe will set you back all of £8 to £10 per head including wine or beer. Where in the UK can you get this AND enough to take home for the next day. I can not remember the last time I paid £4 for a glass of good quality wine in a restaurant in the UK. And how about all the drinks refills? Any restaurant in Florida will refill coffee or soft drinks all night if you can drink them.
Clothing is still so much cheaper in Florida too, especially baby clothes (£4 for a baby grow). It is still a good rule of thumb that most things are the same price in Florida in dollars as it is in the UK in pounds. By that I mean a McDonalds burger for 99p here will be . 99cents in Florida or wine that costs £5. 95 per glass in a restaurant in the UK will be $5. 95 in Florida. Even with the low exchange rate it is still a bargain.
So come on, stop complaining and get over to Florida and have some fun, you only live once.
